In traditional cognition, “heaven” is often understood as a symbol of natural forces, cosmic order, and even divinity. People hold deep reverence for “heaven” and regard it as the supreme existence that determines human destiny and the operation rules of all things in the world. Humans are between heaven and earth. In traditional cognition, “heaven” is often understood as a symbol of natural forces, cosmic order, and even divinity. People hold deep reverence for “heaven” and regard it as the supreme existence that determines human destiny and the operation rules of all things in the world. Humans are between heaven and earth. They are not only restricted by “heaven” but also depend on the nourishment of “earth”. Their status is relatively passive. Only by conforming to the way of heaven and earth can they survive and develop.
“Man” has become the new “heaven”. Here, “man” is not an ordinary individual but symbolizes the chivalrous ones in the human world. Chivalrous people are not limited to characters in martial arts novels. They do not show brute courage on the streets. Instead, they uphold freedom and morality as their life principles and do what they think is right. When humans have free space for thought and action, they can show the courage and responsibility like the vast sky and become a force leading social progress. Mozi and his disciples can be regarded as representatives of such chivalrous people. They bravely challenge injustice with resolute actions and firmly guard their inner beliefs. This kind of behavior makes them become a kind of “deity” and is admired and worshipped.
Looking down at the long river of history, in a society lacking a free environment and room for the soul to stretch, it is difficult to reproduce the chivalrous spirit of the Spring and Autumn Period, the Warring States Period, the Wei, Jin, Sui, and Tang Dynasties. Without freedom, there is no lofty spirit.
Nowadays, chivalry has gradually evolved from an initial identity into a spirit buried in people's hearts. People no longer passively accept fate. When the heart is no longer bound, thought can be independent. And the independence of thought is like a beam of light shining at the beginning of freedom.
In this part of my works, the young chivalrous ones I have created are sunny, positive, full of vigor and vitality. They are the hope of the future. They are not one person but a group. They travel from ancient times to today and run from today to the future. They are me, and I am also them.
