Biography
“Xia” (chivalrous swordsman) is an oriental romantic sentiment. It endows each of us with unique and colorful hues in our hearts, prompting us to pursue love, freedom, struggle, and courage—these eternal themes of humanity.
Thomas More's "Utopia" and the "Peach Blossom Spring" described by Tao Yuanming are both trying to describe an "ideal world" to us. The former emphasizes a perfect social system, while the latter is based on the unity of heaven and man and the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. My deep worship of nature makes me inclined more towards the latter state. It is like a gentle and invisible force that gives my soul a sense of belonging. When creating sculptures, I like to represent the image and state of young chivalrous swordsmen. They are sunny inside, positive and upward, full of vigor and vitality, representing hope and the future. At the same time, people of this age are forming a unique set of outlook on life and world view. Physiologically speaking, youth is just a stage in our long life. But psychologically speaking, one can maintain a youthful mindset throughout life. The young people I portray are not a specific person. They are a group of people. They travel from ancient times to today and run from today to the future. They are me, and I am them.
For animals or mythical beasts, I often compare them to people with distinct personalities. These dispositions are derived from "Xia" and become different carriers of expression. The state they present is that of independent souls with the ability to think. Romantic sentiment will never fade in art.
In my creative system, humans or animals are all "Plato" in a spiritual sense. They are trying to explore an ideal mode of human existence. Whether it is "Utopia" or "Peach Blossom Spring", they are all ideal homelands that humanity aspires to. Our longing for a beautiful world and our thinking about the future become the driving force for the continuous progress of society until we infinitely approach that ideal homeland. And the works I create are like adding bricks and tiles to this ideal Peach Blossom Spring.
